How did Pakistani mango end China's cultural revolution?
During the era of Mao in new China, hungry people were thrashed for stealing rice.Teachers and the intellectuals were disgraced on the roads and squares.Over 50 million people had died of hunger, disease, and torture.Even people in new China were executed over humiliating the Pakistani mangoes.
Whether Mao really was so cruel or it was all merely propaganda?
I am Sadaqat Ali and in History of China , I will show you all this.
Following the revolution, the Chinese government took two major steps that later proved very controversial. These steps changed the history of China forever. The first step was, "Great Leap Forward."And the second was the world-renowned, Cultural Revolution. However, before these steps were taken a small but interesting act was carried out.You may laugh, but Mao ordered the Chinese nation to end rats, flies, mosquitoes, and sparrows in the country. This step purported ending the diseases and protecting the crops from rats and sparrows. This drive had started in 1958 and within months the Chinese killed rats, sparrows, flies, and...mosquitoes in the weight of tonnes. These creatures were completely washed away in China. After ending these insects and the animals fast, the Chinese people faced another big challenge.Since China was a poor agricultural country as such it lagged behind the world in industries. It had no money to get machinery for setting up industries. For it, Mao thought a different thing that was termed 'Great Leap Forward' in the state history.
Mao decided to take the country ahead in steel production by 1972 that it would beat the UK.And for it, he ordered setting up furnaces all over the country particularly in rural areas.Mao ordered everyone, whether farmer, shopkeeper, or civil servant, to work in that furnaces after his duty.Even the women were ordered to work in that furnaces quitting their household jobs.Public kitchens were also set up with the furnaces to provide food to the workers as the site.Farmers were asked to provide surplus crops to the government for the public kitchens.Hence the whole Chinese nation got busy and not a single person was sitting idle.Posters were pasted at every furnace throughout China to overtake Britain in steel production by 1970.At the same time, Moa announced trade with foreign states instead of accepting aid from them.Mao took excelled steps but Chinese progress perhaps was yet not divinely approved."The Great Leap Forward' was initiated in 1958 but China faced a severe feminine in the next two years. The country had a dry spell while the farmers too failed to focus on the crops for spending time on furnaces. They had also already provided their stock of crops to the government while...the drought failed cultivation of 320million acres of the land.As a result, people began to starve to death. It also gave realization to the Chinese about the blunder they committed about killing sparrows and flies.Because sparrows eliminated the insects that were harmful to the crops. Therefore China later on imported sparrows from other countries. However, when the feminine intensified, the Chinese government did not sit idle.It at once engaged 65 million farmers and students to dig out canals and water reservoirs. The remedy could not be found out despite these steps. The water reservoirs did a little to end the feminine so it stayed on.Now the situation was such that no food was provided at the public kitchens.Through a dreadful solution to this problem, sick and the old-aged were denied food at the public kitchens. At many places, even the children went without food. The restriction aimed to secure food for the workers.Consequently, people without food begin to die of starvation.

Many were punished when they stole food from public kitchens.A historian from Hongkong, Frank Dikotter, researched deeply the "Great Leap Forward."He said the Chines found guilty of stealing food were dipped in water with hands and foot tied. The parents were forced to bury their children alive. They were littered with dirt and garbage and beaten. These accusations may be true or propaganda. But the fact of the matter, such oppression is common where feminines come about. As such an individual, a party or a country cannot be singled out in this regard. It is also unclear whether this was done on the instance of Mao or...the local administrators had become hard on their own.Reason can be any but factually over 45 million Chinese had lost lives in the tyrannical acts. The West still holds Mao responsible for these deaths. But the fact was, Mao had soon realized the decision to engage the farmers to furnaces was not correct.''The Great Leap Forward," sincerely started in 1958 was wrapped up in 1962.The farmers went back to cultivation quitting the factories. But by then, the Mao's government had become quite unpopular. The Western experts opined Mao would not have the government had there been no China-India war in 1962.But the war revitalized Mao's popularity. But the fact of the matter, despite the elapse of 13 years Chinese revolution was still out of control. And problems for the government were growing. At that time, China also fought two wars with Taiwan. They furthered losses of China.Because China regarded Taiwan as its part and it was truly so.Therefore Mao announced in 1955 to liberate Taiwan. Now Mao wanted to get Taiwan back.On the order of Mao, Chinese army in 1955 captured some small islands under the control of Taiwan. In response, America moved its naval fleet and also threatened China with atomic-war.The US inked defense pact with Taiwan and provided it with the latest weapons and the Sabre planes. When Chinse forces again advanced to Taiwan in 1958, it brought the Sabres into action.Chinese 100 Mig planes faced 32 Sabres of Taiwan. In the deadly fight, Taiwan shot down 11 Migs of China and damaged badly six others. The Sabres were equipped with the US Sidewinder missiles. They hit the Migs from remote while the Chinese planes were missing this capability. It was the first use of missiles in the aerial fight. This defeat awakened China to the need of acquiring modern technology to rout Taiwan. So China abandoned attacks any further. The loss of Taiwan war and failure of the "Great Leap Forward" posed big challenges to Moa.
Now a majority was thinking Moa's ideology was wrong and he was a failed person.Mao had idealized everyone in China equal. And that everyone should only work for the betterment of the state and the nation. Many did not agree with these ideas of Mao.Particularly many teachers in the universities were opposed to Mao's ideas. They believed in class distinction according to differences in the social status of people. They also justified the concentration of wealth by the individual. On the other, many farmers wanted to get self benefit from their crops. They were not willing to give their produce to the state.A revolt had occurred in Moa's own party.Mao's powers had also been curtailed after the failure of the "Great Leap Forward."In this scenario, a theatrical drama was performed. It showed how an officer was sacked during the kingship for criticizing the government.Moa saw the drama and perceived it as an indirect criticism on him.So he decided to purge the Party of the insurgents. And punish those concentrating the wealth or who were opposed to his ideas.

The Red Guards served him well on that occasion. The Red Guards were the passionate youth and diehard of Mao.Millions of youths were gathered from all over the country. They were given to read Mao's book titled, "the Best Sayings of Moa."For its red cover, this book is also called in the West as, the "Little Red Book."Since Red symbolized the Communism therefore, these youth were called the Red Guards. The Red Guards raised the slogan for only upholding Mao's ideology. That the ideas of Mao's opponents, faith, the Western civilization, and old Chinese culture all are wrong. So anyone criticizing Mao or adopted the Western or the old Chinese culture would be put to death. The Red Guards launched the Cultural Revolution of China in 1966.So after four years of the failure of "Great Leap Forward," a new revolution had started in China.

critics including teachers, intellectuals and students. They were beaten with nailed rods. They were lain down on the bits of glasses, tortured with boiling water and subjected to other methods. At many places, wooden boards were hanged on the neck of the teachers that inscribed the ''spy of the West.''Moreover, white caps were put on Moa's opponents and shown in the processions. The participants of the processions beat drums and abused the accused. While the Red Guards holding brooms walked with the processions.By holding the brooms they showed they were cleansing dirt of the society.Things did not end here but the accused were lashed by the children and even women were not spared. The Red Guards also began to oppress the farmers in rural areas. The farmers were begun to be held guilty for raising kettle, storing firewood or the food. The Red Guards believed they were means to become rich. And holding wealth was a crime in Mao's China.Place of worship, antiquities, sculptures, paintings, nothing was safe.Western goods were destroyed.People quizzed Red Guards if the use of Western goods was wrong then why the use of Western inventions. The western invented goods should also be destroyed.Such questioners also faced torture and threats. The Red Guards also held strict investigations of five million Communists. It goes that 75000 of them were killed for opposing Mao's ideology. The anti-government civil servants were also victimized. The situation worsened to the extent of deep public frustration and bloody clashes with the Red Guards. The government was forced to order the army to open fire on the Rad Guards at some places.Against increasing bloodshed, a section of the army joined the Moa's opponents in the country. The civil war appeared engulfing entire China and the situation was quite painful for Mao.He did not know the Red Guards would be cruel that much. Therefore he decided to halt the campaign for the Cultural Revolution. He sent 30000 workers with his books to Tsinghua University which the Rad Guards possessed. They were meant to persuade the Red Guards to calmness. But the Red Guards had gone out of the control of even Mao now. They attacked and killed five workers of Mao and injured 700 others.
Why the Red Guards did it?
The history was replete with the incidents wherein the leaders had flared up the youth in their interest...but they become impossible to be normal again thus making the revolution counter-productive.Simply we can say, the revolution spoils its own eggs. The emotional Red Guards had gone much ahead and factions had also been created among them. They were raising slogans against Mao.At a place, the Red Guards affixed a poster provoking for burning Moa alive.Even posters were pasted against the wife of Mao. Yes, it all was happening in China. It goes that during the Cultural Revolution as many as 8 million people were killed.

Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution altogether took the life of over 50 million people.Obviously, Mao was held responsible for these deaths.China was at the brink of civil war when Pakistan sent Mangoes to Mao as a gift. This gift stalled civil war in China.Mao distributed mangoes among his activists. It created an outburst among the activists and they took it as Mao's acceptance to the rights of...the farmers and the workers. That now the Cultural Revolution was over and the Red Guards had lost the value.Pakistani mangoes were sent to various places while people also held rallies considering them as sacred.Incredibly, people also bowed down to show respect to the mangoes.A public announcement was made to restrain disrespect of the mangoes. In that course, a very sad incident took place that a person was executed for dishonouring the mangoes. He had similarized mango with sweet potato, that was his only offence.Pakistani mangoes chilled the fire of civil war in China.Observing the public mood, the rulers also took a majority of the Red Guards from urban to rural areas. The Red Guards hostile to Mao were also crushed.Hence the Cultural Revolution started in 1966, reached the logical conclusion after two years. However, a section believed the elimination of Mao's opponents continued till 1976 when Moa died.Pakistani mangoes had averted civil war in China but interestingly, Mao did not like mangoes. But Pakistan mangoes greatly served Mao.China had also amazingly increased its military power when this all was going on.
