It was the 13th century when the famous Italian tourist Marco Polo arrived in China.
He went back to Europe and told such a story of China's wealth that the country became a dream world for European youth.
In that period, India's wealth stories also became very popular.
European nations struggled to reach these countries.
Columbus discovered America in an effort to find the sea route to India.
European powers got access to India, but China was safe from their attacks.
But it was not possible for too long.
China faced rebellions and attacks, but then a long march changed the history of the world and China.
China suffered from opium addiction and internal conflicts. But how it became a world power?
I am Sadaqat Ali and you are Read This Article,
The British naval ships reached China in 1834.
But the stories of China's wealth and development were now part of the past.
In the 19th century, China was not a world power and had no say in the world community.

Most Chinese people were smoking opium.
And the serious people of the nation shed tears and recalled the past glory.
This is a bitter fact that when a nation is facing decline
It feels delight in telling stories of the past and does not face present challenges properly.
In these circumstances the British Navy arrived China
British trade envoy Lord William John Napier forced the Chinese government for a trade agreement.
China used to avoid contact with the rest of the world.
Because the Chinese people were proud of their culture and history.
Chinese believed that people around the world are uncivilized and brutal.
And only China has done all the progress and development.
And if there is any progress in the rest of the world, then it is taught by the Chinese.
But in 1834, China was so weak that it could not stop the foreign invaders.
Chinese officials refused to meet Lord Napier, British ships started bombarding two Chinese castles.
But Lord Napier died and the matter ended soon.
But China's coastal city, Canton became hub of the British trade.
At this time, opium trade was a profitable business and there was a huge market in China.
In the 19th century, the Chinese used so much opium that this century is known as "Century of Shame".
Opium trade was banned in China. Death penalty was fixed for opium traders and drug addicts.
Now the British started trading opium, Chinese were upset and decided to punish the foreigners.

The Chinese were so proud of their past. They still felt that it was possible to defeat a superpower like Britain.
But this misunderstanding was about to end soon.
China destroyed twenty-five thousand boxes of opium in 1839, the boxes contained 1,400 tonnes of opium.
This worsened the relations between China and Britain.
Meanwhile, another incident happened, few British nationals killed a Chinese citizen.
When the Chinese authorities decided to prosecute the killers, the British were angry.
British forces attacked China. It was China's worst defeat in a long time.
The United Kingdom signed an agreement with China in 1842, the terms were extremely disgusting to China.
These were the main terms of the agreement.
1. China will cede Hong Kong to the UK.
2. China will open 5 ports for foreign trade.
3. Minimum taxes for the British goods in China.
4. The UK will open its embassy in China.
5. The agreement will be written in both English and Chinese languages.
But the English text will be preferred over the Chinese.
This defeat and the disgusting agreement shook China.
The Chinese nation who taught war strategy, invented gunpowder, introduced guns and cannons,
Who invented mines and hand grenades, who gave the concept of rocket launchers and machine guns,
that nation is defeated by such a small country?
No Chinese had ever thought of this.
The Chinese people wanted revenge from the Britain.
But this wave still needed more fuel to turn into a revolution.
And the foreign powers provided this fuel.
As in 1856, Chinese authorities confiscated a British ship "Arrow" near the port city of Canton.
They arrested the ship crew.
Chinese suspected that pirates were using the ship.
Ship's captain complained to the British authorities in Hong Kong, British ships attacked Canton.
Later, France and America joined the war.
Chinese cities and coastal castles were severely bombarded.
But there is another surprising fact.

The UK wanted to punish China and its forces were moving towards China in large numbers.
But in 1857, freedom struggle started in India.
So the forces going to China were sent to India.
So China survived a major attack. But the war continued.
The British and the French forces occupied the Chinese capital Peking.
And the Chinese emperor Xianfeng fled the capital.
China accepted the defeat again and the UK signed a new agreement with China.
The terms of this agreement were even more humiliating for China.
After this defeat, the Chinese government became so weak that it never again challenged the world powers.
But the world powers continued to cut China into pieces.
France attacked Vietnam and snatched it from China in 1884.
In this war China's most humiliating defeat was the naval battle.
The French naval fleet sank around 10 Chinese ships in less than an hour.
In that era China had become a pie for the big powers, which was being divided into many parts.
The UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States had chosen their favourite areas.
And practically they were occupying these areas.
However, China had nominal freedom, because it was impossible to occupy the whole country.
So the foreign powers brought all the coastal areas under their control.

The Chinese people were disturbed by the situation.
But the real problem began when the foreigners started changing their religion too.
After the 1856 war, thousands of Christian missionaries had entered China and were converting the people.
Chinese children were taught in the schools,
that the Chinese nation's customs are wrong and their salvation is possible only by Christianity.
So these Chinese children grew up as Christians and hated their own culture.
Their festivals, dresses and foods were all in Western style.
They were cut from the Chinese society, and the wall of mutual hatred began to rise.
The invasion of foreign forces, the destruction of the nation by the opium,
And the campaign of Christian missionaries against Chinese customs angered the people.
The government and its officials were also corrupt.
There was also a poverty and crimes in China.
But the war against Japan in 1894 proved to be the last nail in the coffin.
It happened because the Japanese invaded Korea, it was one country at that time.
China was pro-Korean. It sent army to rescue Korea, that proved to be its historical mistake.
The Japanese forces defeated the Chinese.
Japan also occupied Taiwan to teach China a lesson.
Before the war, the Chinese government assured its people that
the foreign troops will help China in the event of a war.
But now the war with Japan ended this concept.
The foreign powers supported China in the war and opposed the Japanese.
But practically they did not help China.

US and British Naval fleets did not come to help China. The Russian infantry also did not participate in the war.
Despite the fact that the forces of all these countries were present in China.
Ironically, the weapons that the foreign forces had provided to the Chinese also proved useless.
For example, during the naval war, the Chinese admiral was using a German warship.
When the ship fired first shell, its bridge collapsed. The admiral was badly injured.
Two years after the war, the German army captured the port of Qingdao in 1897.
The next year, Hong Kong that was already under the British control,
the British got it on lease for 99 more years.
Over 60 years of bloodshed, opium addiction and mistakes had taught the Chinese people a lesson.
World powers are not friends of anyone and every country makes decisions according to its interests.
Therefore, it is foolish to plan your future with the aid of foreign powers.
Only your own strength is trustworthy.
This thinking started wave of awareness among the Chinese people.
Its first result was that the Chinese took up weapons against the foreign masters.
This was the start of boxer revolution.
What was the Boxer Revolution? How China's first revolution suffered by few hundred people?
Why the Chinese Queen started killing her own people?
We will show you all this in the next Article.
